The Road That Wasn’t There

Friemersheim, Western Cape, South Africa ·

A quiet day trip to Friemersheim turned into a washed-away bridge, a steep narrow road and the kind of detour that becomes the story.

The detour brought us to this river, where the road ahead had been washed away.

We drove out to Friemersheim from Glentana with my parents for what was supposed to be a simple day trip. We took our time through the town, looking at the murals and enjoying somewhere a little different from the usual coastal stops.

The countryside around Friemersheim felt every bit as interesting as the town itself.

On the way back we decided to try a different route home. It looked like a good idea on the map, right up until the road brought us to a bridge that had been washed away. There was no getting across, so we stopped and got out to have a look.

Then the road simply ended

The unexpected stop gave me time to walk around with the camera. The river was beautiful — dark trees, rocky shallows and little pockets of light through the forest — and suddenly the failed shortcut did not feel like such a bad thing.

Turning around was its own adventure

Getting back out turned out to be the harder part. The road was steep and too narrow to turn around comfortably, and for a while we managed to get ourselves a bit stuck. Eventually we worked our way out safely and headed back the way we had come.

A small detour turned into the part of the day we’ll probably remember most.

By the time we headed back toward Glentana, a quiet outing had become a properly eventful day. Friemersheim is well worth visiting for the murals and the drive itself, but it was the unplanned part that gave me some of my favourite photographs from the day — and a story we would not have had if we had simply taken the normal road home.
